Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 PM EDT Fri Oct 23 2026 Valid 00Z Sat Oct 24 2026 - 00Z Mon Oct 26 2026 ...Heavy rainfall lifts into the Plains this weekend; severe weather continues over New Mexico and West Texas... ...Strong cold front ushers in much cooler weather over parts of the Plains and Midwest... ...Unsettled weather expected along the eastern Florida coast... The weather map over the Lower 48 this afternoon depicts two frontal areas in close proximity with each other over the Western and Central U.S. The first system, characterized by a Pacific cold front, currently extends across the High Plains and Desert Southwest. As this system meanders eastward, the threat of scattered heavy rainfall and some severe weather will slowly migrate towards the Southern/Central High Plains over the next two days. Eventually, the second system located over the Northern High Plains will rapidly deepen along a northeastward track towards the Hudson Bay. The trailing cold front is forecast to sweep across the Plains and become the dominant feature later this weekend. Much of the Northern Plains will begin to feel the effects of this strong front today with some snow showers possible in west-central Montana. By Sunday, high pressure streaming in behind the front will lead to daytime highs 20-30 degrees cooler than today. Meanwhile, an uptick in showers and thunderstorms is expected tomorrow along the eastern Florida coast, owing to strong onshore flow north of a stationary boundary near the Florida Straits. The persistence of this pattern could support scattered flash flooding for urban, low-lying, and poor drainage areas.
